Rich History of Hungary and Heritage
Magyar tribes under Árpád settled the Carpathian Basin in the late 9th century, and in 1000 AD Stephen I founded the Kingdom of Hungary, aligning it with medieval Christendom.
The 1241 Mongol invasion devastated the kingdom; later (1541–1699), Ottoman rule split Hungary between Habsburg, Ottoman, and Transylvanian territories.
The 1699 Treaty of Karlowitz cedes most Hungarian lands back to the Habsburgs; the 1867 Ausgleich creates the Austro-Hungarian Empire, which collapsed in WW I.
Post-WW I treaties shrank Hungary by two-thirds; it aligned with Nazi Germany in WW II, was Soviet-occupied thereafter, saw the 1956 uprising, transitioned to democracy in 1989, and joined NATO/EU by 2004.
